Beautiful photographs and comprehensive information!
While on the island of Nantucket I read this book and used it to take my own walking tour of many of the houses and historic buildings on the island. It is extremely well written and had hundreds of full color photos of the buildings, ocean, boats, and all that makes Nantucket so special. A must read for those planning a trip to the island and for those who visited and want to relive the pleasure of their trip.

The Nantucket Restaurants Cookbook: Menus and Recipes from the Faraway Isle

A Beautiful picture of the Nantucket Restaurant Scene
Though I've never been to Nantucket, this book absolutely makes me want to go, the next time I'm on the East Coast. In the meantime, I can flip through this gorgeous book and dream. The photography is alluring and recipes so inventive and interesting. Some of them seem a little cheffy, but for the most part they look easy enough to make for a summer dinner party. Plus, the profiles of the restaurantuers make me want to try their recipes! It makes a great gift.

A stunning window on the past
For anyone on Long Island interested at all in local history, this book is a must-have. A perfect coffe-table conversation-starter, the images and captions contained within this collection are both beautiful in their own right, and stunning when looked at through the portal of 60 to 130 years of hindsight. Includes early LIRR photos, depictions of main streets as they were, and a seizable collection of photos of old mansions and estates, most of which no longer exist. Book consists entirely of photos and their captions. Starts in Port Washinton on the north shore and works though all the historic villiages down to Freeport on the south. While thorough, can't help leaving any reader wanting to see more.

Nasty Breaks

Fabulous!!!
Professional golfer Lee Ofsted has just landed an instructor's job assisting fellow pro Jackie Piper at a beautiful Rhode Island resort. Her job is to provide golf lessons to the employees of a marine salvage company. To Lee, this is an easy way to combine a vacation with making an easy grand a day for a week. However, the anticipated idyllic week goes sour at the fourth hole when Darlene Chappell, the spouse of the salvage company president, Stuart, is almost kidnapped. Soon afterward, Stuart is found murdered.

Lee and her friend begin to investigate the murder. To their amazement, many people had the motive to kill Stuart. However, as she gets closer to the truth, Lee literally finds herself in a sudden death game in which her life is the ultimate stake.

The third Lee Ofsted mystery novel is a fabulous who-done-it due to the brilliant characterizations of the lead protagonist, her associates, and all the duffers hooking their swing. The story line is interesting as Charlotte and Aaron Elkins scribes a fabulous amateur sleuth tale. This reviewer recommends to lovers of golf and amateur sleuth stories, all three books (the previous two are WICKED SLICE and ROTTEN LIES) because they are superb mysteries.

National Geographic One Whole Day: Wild Ponies
Published in Hardcover by National Geographic (October, 2002)
Author: Jim Arnosky

A beautiful book
I will admit to being a bit biased, as I live near Assateage Island National Seashore - the setting of this book - and spend a great deal of time there. But this really is a great story. So much attention has been paid to the wild ponies of Chincoteague (Misty, etc.) that I am glad the Assateague ponies get the attention here. I have never read a disappointing Jim Arnosky book, and this is no exception. His illustrations are incredible, and his simple poetry moves the reader through a day with the wild horses that is very moving. Not only does Arnosky teach about pony ecology, and how they fit into the barrier island ecosystem, but he features many of the other creatures that share this special place. This is a terrific story for horse lovers and those who love beaches and wetlands. I cannot recommend it highly enough, and encourage readers to check out all of Arnosky's wonderful nature books.

Native Trees and Shrubs of the Florida Keys : A Field Guide/Also South Florida, Cuba, the Bahamas, the Islands of the Caribbean, Parts of Mexico, sout
Published in Paperback by Hafftime Enterprises (March, 1996)

Most thorough botanical guide written about the Florida Keys
Author J. Paul Scurlock, now deceased, devoted his retirement years exploring the Florida Keys, observing and photographing every specimen of tree and shrub. Pulished in 1987, It was researched and written before massive development in the Keys and pestiferous imports destroyed many of the native habitats. This book is still considered the bible of Florida Keys shrub and tree identification. With more two or three photos of most plants, it makes identification immeasurably easier: there's a photo of the entire tree, a close-up of the leaves, and the fruit, flower, or most remarkable aspect of the tree close up.

The plants are arranged in alphabetical order by botanical names. Information includes common names and scientific synonyms, detailed physical description, diurnal and seasonal changes, fascinating tidbits, and clues to tricky identifications.

The book emphasizes scientifc information, but is enjoyably readable for anyone interested in home gardening, ecology, or nature. The Miami Herald called it "The first field guide of its kind ...a a book that botanists can respect and nature lovers can understand." I absolutely agree.

I've had the book for several years, and find myself pulling it off the shelf frequently when I encounter a new plant while taking a walk, or want to see if a plant I want in my garden will survive the harsh shoreline conditions of my Florida Keys home.

The Year in Wildlife
This is a perfect book for anyone interested in the wildlife of MDI. Mrs. Grierson has obviously spent a great deal of time observing the seasonal changes around her. Her love of her surroundings bubbles over into this little book. Monthly highlights and expected changes or arrivals are concisely written with just enough factual info. This book will encourage more walks in the Park or a closer look at the birds at the feeder. The drawings scattered throughout add to the comfortable feeling of this book.A must have for anyone who has ties to the nature of MDI.
